“I hope everyone can respect the family’s wishes over privacy at this very difficult time for us. It’s touch and go whether my father will get through this,” said his son Ross in the Mail.
Wilkins has long been associated with Italian football, spending three years at Milan from 1984-87.
He was also assistant manager to Carlo Ancelotti at Chelsea in 2009-10 and worked as a football pundit.
