Italy’s former team doctor Enrico Castellacci admits he is ‘puzzled’ by the government’s reluctance to let clubs resume training.

Castellacci headed the Azzurri’s medical department between 2004 and 2018, winning the World Cup in 2006.

Speaking to Radio Bruno, the 69-year-old explained how team training could be as safe as exercising in a park.

Speaking to Radio Bruno, the 69-year-old explained how team training could be as safe as exercising in a park.

“The government’s caution has been a bit excessive: I don’t understand how individual training can’t be done on a football field that’s split,” he argued.

“Do you know how big a football field is? If it’s used at different times, with one member of staff for each player, it would be the same as if someone trained in a park or garden. It’s left me puzzled.

“Generally speaking, I can't think that a professional player would go three to four months without training.

“I’ve seen so much pessimism today, probably from not wanting to risk seeing the epidemic rekindle, which would bring our country more to its knees than it already is.”
