Serie A clubs were only allowed to buy one new non-EU player per season as of last summer, when Italy's dismal showing in the 2010 World Cup prompted a rethink.
Clubs were unhappy at the change and welcomed today's return to the limit of two players who do not have European Union passports.
“The rule was changed after a unanimous agreement on what is a strategic problem for Italian football,” said Federation President Giancarlo Abete.
Lega Serie A President Maurizio Beretta also commented on the regulation.
“The return to two non-EU players restores competitiveness to Italian football. All the elements were in sync regarding this decision – Serie A, B, Lega Pro and amateurs.”
