Luis Enrique insists it was “the right thing to do for the players and the fans” when suspending tonight’s Catania-Roma match.

The game was 1-1 when a waterlogged pitch made play impossible after 65 minutes, so the remaining 25 minutes will be played at a later date.

“It’s a shame the weather could not allow us to continue, but it was the right thing to do for the players and the fans,” said the Giallorossi Coach.

“There was the risk of injury and very little chance of seeing any real football in those conditions.”

Before half-time the pitch was still in good shape and Catania had taken the lead through Nicola Legrottaglie, then Daniele De Rossi equalised.

“We tried too hard to push through the middle, making far too many mistakes and risking a great deal at the back.

“The whole defence got it wrong on the goal and not just the defender who was blocked off. Fortunately we equalised a few minutes later. Before the suspension it was a wide open game.”

Possible dates to play the final 25 minutes reportedly include February 1, 8 and 15.
