Stephan El Shaarawy found it “very satisfying” that he was able to score his first official goal since February – and a header too.

“Despite the fact PSV got a strong start, we were able to take the lead and then had two or three more chances,” he said of the 1-1 Champions League play-off draw in Eindhoven.

“In the end, PSV were able to equalise. It was a good performance and an important result.

“It’s only normal that we were behind in terms of match fitness, but we had good concentration and intensity. The only regret is that we were unable to hold on for the win.”

This was The Little Pharaoh’s first competitive goal since February.

“It was my first goal in an official match since the derby and it’s also my first header, so it’s very satisfying.

“This is an El Shaarawy who really wants to get going, to score and do well. Now we must focus on the game with Verona and then consider the second leg.”
