Josip Ilicic was still out of action with a lymph node infection and it was once again hosted by the Mapei Stadium in Reggio-Emilia, usually the arena for Sassuolo, as the Stadio Azzurri d’Italia in Bergamo isn’t up to UEFA code.

There was bad news for Hapoel, who lost Almog Buzaglo when he seemed to sprain his ankle after an awkward landing and had to be stretchered off.

Duvan Zapata and Pessina combined beautifully, but the roll across was just beyond Timothy Castagne, who only needed to tap in.

Papu Gomez curled a free kick just wide, but goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini flew to palm away a sudden long-range Radu Ginsari snapshot on the stroke of half-time.

Atalanta remain very strong on set plays and only a fine save denied Berat Djimsiti’s header from a corner.

They did eventually break through with a towering Duvan Zapata header as Castagne whipped in the cross from the right.

The Colombian was inches away from a second moments later, just failing to get his toe to a Papu Gomez finish that flashed across an open goal.

It was substitute Andreas Cornelius who completed the rout in stoppages, a through ball finding him relatively unmarked at the back post, where his finish squeezed through despite two defenders attempting last ditch sliding blocks.
