Eusebio Di Francesco wants the 1-0 victory over Torino to represent “a starting point” for Sampdoria after three consecutive defeats.

Manolo Gabbiadini got the only goal, Samp’s first from open play in Serie A this season, to get them off the foot of the table.

“When there are situations like this, the fear of winning can set in. A victory can make a huge difference to the growth process of a team, especially against a tough opponent like Torino,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

There had already been sack calls around Di Francesco after the disastrous start to the season.

“As I’d said, if you don’t have determination, then tactics are entirely futile. I don’t know how many times to caught Toro offside today, but were absolutely focused.

“I think this win has to represent a starting point for Sampdoria. This team needs communication, someone who talks and sets the tempo, and I saw more of that today from several players.

“We had to play the almost perfect game on a defensive level today. The way I see football, we can do far, far better when going forward, but I realise at this time we need to build confidence.

“Gabbiadini was decisive today and had a good approach, but everyone knows I expect more from someone with his talent. He went off because he had muscular problems.”
