Genoa Coach Davide Ballardini criticises fans for whistling Gianluca Lapadula – “he took responsibility”.

The striker missed a penalty against Spal, drawing whistles from the crowd after just two Serie A goals all season.

The 28-year-old later made it three goals after converting a second spot kick, and his Coach wants the forward to be given more support.

“I don’t agree with the whistles at all,” Ballardini declared in his pre-Cagliari Press conference.

“He’s a player who never saves himself, he works and suffers even when the team is having trouble creating the play.

“He took responsibility in taking the second penalty, which took incredible nerve. He earned the second penalty, it was there and he took responsibility.

“Lapadula is a player who I, if I were watching the game, would never whistle because he’s a player who gives everything from the first to last second, who doesn’t ever save himself.

“I repeat, I’d never whistle a player like him.”

The Grifone face Cagliari tomorrow, and a win could take them definitively out of the relegation scrap.

“It’s not match point tomorrow. As we’ve been saying for some time it’s a very important match, but it’s not match point.

“We’ll think about tomorrow’s match, and then about the derby.”
