Former goalkeeper Nando Orsi hit back at Napoli fans who blamed Alex Meret for the two Liverpool goals. ‘He could not have done more, they shouldn’t have allowed the free headers.’

The Partenopei suffered their first defeat of the season last night at Anfield, falling 2-0 to Liverpool, but still topped the Champions League group thanks to a superior head-to-head record.

Both goals were practically identical, free headers from a corner by Virgil van Dijk and Darwin Nunez, Meret parrying on the line before a tap-in on the rebound.

“It seems like every time Napoli concede a goal, people put the blame on Meret,” complained former goalkeeper and current Sky Sport Italia pundit Nando Orsi on Radio Marte.

“In those circumstances, Meret’s responsibility is minimal to zero. He made the saves and none of his teammates helped him out.

“I don’t think he could’ve done any more on those goals, his teammates shouldn’t have allowed the free headers. Nunez and Van Dijk were allowed to leap undisturbed on the corners.

“Nonetheless, it was a good performance and Napoli leave aware they played on level terms with a big squad like Liverpool. It was a painless defeat.”

  1. Whoever blames Meret for either goals is brain**d or a plain id*ot.

Headers are the most difficult shots to save and he did well to block them, couldn’t do more on either occasion.
