Erick Pulgar’s opener for the Rossoblu was cancelled out by Edin Dzeko, but the Emilia-Romagna club hung on for a creditable share of the points despite enjoying just 30 per cent of possession.

“The boys were good. We had the chances to even try to do something more, but we weren’t slick enough,” Donadoni said in his assessment of proceedings.

“However, we are still happy with the result and with the boys’ performance.

“We created various chances from set pieces, but we weren’t that great with the final ball.

“The spirit, sacrifice and compactness were there.”

The former Italy Coach was asked why Mattia Destro did not feature and insists he did not hear any dissent from the home fans.

“I want to thank the supporters for encouraging us at the end. I didn’t hear whistles or anything else for the fact Destro didn’t come on.”

“I needed players with different characteristics, like Orsolini or Krejci.”
