Roberto Donadoni discusses Antonio Conte feeling “alone” as Italy CT – “it’s something I said too”.

The outgoing Azzurri boss complained “no-one was on my side” during his two year reign, and one of his predecessors agrees.

“My national team was at a different time,” Donadoni, CT from 2006-2008 said on Rai Radio Uno.

“That’s history, and it’s useless to talk too much and compare one or the other. It’s too bad they went out on penalties again, as happened to me.

“We needed a little more coolness from the players, although in the economy of the game Germany had something more.

“We held our heads high, with a spirit of togetherness but on the pitch they deserved to be ahead.

“The CT feeling alone? It worries me and should make us think, it’s something I said and now Conte has said. But things are still deadlocked.

“There are all the components to make things better, but we find ourselves repeating the same things. If you don’t have the tools, there’s not much you can do.”

Donadoni then gave his thoughts on the future of Italian football.

“We have to realise that at the moment the strongest players look to England. It must be said that Germany are developing, and players look to the Bundesliga thanks to what their national team have done.

“We must stop with certain practices, with lots of words about young people when in reality not much is done. The youth sector is of little interest, and is often only used to make money.

“England being knocked-out? It’s hard to explain certain failures. I think they had a way of playing that causes them difficulty, rather than how they play in their League.”
