Giuseppe Rossi was happy to act as Italy captain for the first time in his career, but concedes the performance was disappointing.

The Villarreal starlet was chosen as captain because he was the one with the most caps in the starting XI, even though it was only his 18th.

“It was emotional to wear the captain's armband. I played 45 minutes and am happy enough with the result. We can all go home and focus on our clubs now,” he said.

“There was a lot of confusion in the first half, which is normal considering we only had one training session together.

“Romania were more tired after the break, allowing us more space so we could pass the ball around better.”

The experimental system of using no pure centre-forward in the first half was ineffective, as both Rossi and Alessandro Diamanti were substituted at half-time.

“I think we have players who can use this system, but the final choices are down to the Coach.”
