Lazio spokesperson Arturo Diaconale has hit out at Massimo Cellino, implying that his coronavirus diagnosis has no bearing on whether Serie A resumes.

Cellino has released several statements since announcing he had tested positive for coronavirus, but Diaconale believes it is a ploy to end the season now, given Brescia are nine points adrift of safety.

“Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Brescia President Massimo Cellino who, after spending Easter with his family in Sardinia before returning home, discovered he was suffering from coronavirus,” he wrote on Facebook.

“Our wishes of a quick recovery don’t contradict the fact his request to terminate the season due to his illness should be interpreted as: ‘Everyone has to stop because I’m unwell.’”

The lawyer then had some harsh words for CONI President Giovanni Malago, who is campaigning for Serie A to consider an early termination.

“Cellino, however, doesn’t seem to be the only one to have a Marquis del Grillo conception of themselves.

“It also seems to apply to CONI President Giovanni Malagi who, in an interview, intervened with all the weight of his authority as the highest representative of national sport, to maintain that the season is over without awarding the Scudetto, that is, keeping the current classification intact.

“According to the CONI President, such a decision would send out a great moral signal and the mark the start of a phase of profound innovation in the world of football.”
