Earlier today, calciomercato.com claimed that ex-Inter boss Mazzarri would sign a two-year contract over the next few days.

However, Sky Sport Italia insist this evening that while Mazzarri is in the running, he faces competition from Di Matteo.

However, Sky Sport Italia insist this evening that while Mazzarri is in the running, he faces competition from Di Matteo.

It’s no surprise to see Italian tacticians liked with Watford, as the club is owned by the Pozzo family, who also run Udinese and Granada.

While Mazzarri has been studying English in Italy for over a year, ever since he was fired by Inter in November 2014, Di Matteo has more practical knowledge of the Premier League.

He played in England for Chelsea and even won the Champions League as caretaker manager of the Stamford Bridge side.

The 45-year-old is currently out of work, as his spell with Schalke 04 came to a close in Germany in May 2015.
