DFB President Wolfgang Niersbach identified the work that went into Germany’s World Cup triumph after 24 years.

This was their fourth trophy, but the first since the Berlin Wall came down, as their most recent victory had been in 1990.

“It was just as exciting as 24 years ago,” Niersbach told FIFA after the 1-0 win over Argentina in extra time.

“Mario Gotze’s goal was a moment of pure happiness, pure joy and above all pride in the team and its Coach.

“There were six players on the field who had won the European Under-21 Championship in 2009. We know there are already more great players moving up through the ranks.

“This success is not the work of an individual or the Federation alone, as football is a team sport, on and off the field.”
