Gigi Del Neri is determined to help Genoa win the Derby della Lanterna against his former club. “Sampdoria are in the past now.”

The Coach has lost all four of his games since replacing Gigi De Canio on the Grifone bench and goes into a crucial head-to-head with their local rivals on Sunday evening. Click here for a match preview.

“I think Genoa must continue on the road they started against Napoli,” he said of the 4-2 home defeat.

“It is a derby and we must use the right aggression to win this match. Marco Borriello has recovered and there are still some other things to be evaluated ahead of the game.

“You can feel the atmosphere hotting up and I think the players have good feelings about this match. You have to really ‘feel’ the derby, but not with a sense of fear. In football you need courage and a victory in a derby gives you a push that no other result can achieve.

“I have seen some improvements lately and the derby is the most important appointment in the football year. Clearly, we want to win.”

Del Neri has already experienced victory in the Derby della Lanterna, but he was on the Sampdoria bench.

“I had a great rapport with the Sampdoria fans and nobody can forget the great year we had together. However, Sampdoria are in the past now. I am the Coach of Genoa and we all made different choices.

“I will never forget the good things, but I now hope to have equally enjoyable memories on the other side of the city.

“I hope it’s going to be a healthy derby with football rivalry and all the right ingredients for a sporting feast. The city’s fans can show great maturity on this occasion.”
