The Neroverdi had taken the lead through Francesco Caputo, but the visitors always had momentum throughout and turned it around through Martin Erlic and Emanuel Gyasi on set plays.

“I’m irritated to lose like this, because we conceded avoidable goals,” De Zerbi told Sky Sport Italia.

“We wasted our own scoring opportunities, as two or three times we could’ve passed it to someone who was unmarked and we didn’t.

“We’ve got to accept defeat and get back on track, things aren’t going our way at the moment. We’ve got to work harder and aim higher.”

De Zerbi was asked if perhaps Sassuolo are a little too narcissistic in their possession style and not clinical enough.

“I don’t think so. It’s about making decisions quickly when you enter the opposition penalty area and I don’t see any particularly egotistical players.

“Sometimes you score four or five goals per game, sometimes you don’t. If we had scored to equalise, nobody could’ve complained, but we take the criticism and will examine what we are lacking.

“The problem is that it feels like we’ve been trying to grit our teeth and get through a difficult period for months. We’re not out of the woods yet, evidently.”
