It means Benevento have finally avoided defeat on the road at the sixteenth time of asking this season, although they remain 14 points adrift of safety with only six matches left to play.

“It’s the first away point, but it’s April 15 so it has come late,” De Zerbi acknowledged.

“We looked to play our game, we could have done a little more given our wasted opportunities.

“But Sassuolo also wasted quite a lot, so it is a point that we feel comfortable with.”

January loan signing Cheick Diabate scored both of Benevento’s goals this afternoon, meaning he has now netted a brace in each of his last three matches for Le Streghe.

“He wasn’t known in Italybut he did well in France. He was also top goalscorer in the Africa Cup of Nations, in the area he makes the difference.”
