Lazio’s team doctor admits Mauricio is “doubtful” for Fiorentina but Stefan De Vrij’s recovery “is going better than we expected”.

Mauricio played 90 minutes of yesterday’s 0-0 draw with Carpi, but complained of an injury after the match.

“After the match against Carpi we kept him in Padeia because he got a big bruise in the first half,” Stefano Salvatori explained to Lazio Style Radio.

“In the second half he had a small flare of pain after another challenge. After the game he was very sore, he couldn’t even walk independently.

“He had a lot of pain in his pelvis and the base of the spine. Fortunately the tests didn’t show anything serious, although he was still having trouble walking today.

“He didn’t train. At the moment, given the proximity of the match with Fiorentina, he’s doubtful for Saturday. We hope with the rest today he’ll be able to train tomorrow.”

Salvatori also gave an update on Stefan De Vrij, who has been sidelined for much of the season with knee problems, and has undergone surgery.

“His recovery is proceeding very well, he’s working with very qualified people. We’re still at the beginning of a long process, but the signs are positive.

“We talk every day, in mid-January he’ll return to Rome for tests, he’ll stay in Rome for a few days and we can check on how he’s progressing.

“The answers so far are encouraging, his recovery is going better than we expected.”
