In an interview with Sky Sport Italia, the defender was upbeat about the Blucerchiati’s chances in the new campaign, but realised the side would have to work hard.

“We are newly promoted and we have to demonstrate we deserve to be in Serie A,” the right-back noted. “We start with no particular objectives.”

The 24 year-old international failed to make the Azzurri squad at Euro 2012 despite briefly featuring in the qualifying campaign.

He was then told that he was surplus to requirements at Fiorentina” data-scaytid=”10″>Fiorentina following the permanent move of Mattia Cassani from Palermo.

“I didn’t expect to leave until Cassani was signed. I then started to look around before a call from Sampdoria sporting director Pasquale Sensibile arrived.”

“I’m happy to be able to work under him because he was a great defender.”

De Silvestri is also encouraged by the return of Andrea Poli following his loan spell at Inter, although the midfielder could still leave the port club.

“I'm sure he can give us a big hand and I know he’s a good player. I certainly hope he stays with us because he’s an important midfielder.”
