The Napoli goalkeeper announced it to his teammates and Coach Cesare Prandelli this morning, marking his 36th birthday.
“Last night I spoke to Gigi Buffon, who told me he intends to play on for another 10 years, so I gave up! The truth is I spoke to the Coach and my teammates, and at my age you evaluate things and it is best to leave space for new faces.
“I can therefore give the priority to my club. It’s not easy to leave this great squad, but there are still 12 games to reach the end of the World Cup and I hope – unlike the Euros – we can make that final step to give the Italy fans great joy.
“Behind Gigi, I am leaving the Azzurri in wonderful hands with the likes of Salvatore Sirigu, Federico Marchetti and Emiliano Viviano. They’ll have to wait a few more years, but we are in good hands.
“I told the lads this morning and had spoken to the Coach last night. It was very simple and there wasn’t much to say.
“I am 36 now and have a few goes left which I will try to live to the full at my club.”
