Napoli goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis criticised the referee, but conceded “our elimination was not down to the officials.”

There were protests at Villarreal's winning goal, as Hasan Yebda might've been brought down unfairly in the build-up.

“I have played in Turkey, so I know the quality of referees there is very good, but without doubt they favour the home team every time,” said the shot-stopper who featured for Galatasaray in 2008-09.

“I have played in Turkey, so I know the quality of referees there is very good, but without doubt they favour the home team every time,” said the shot-stopper who featured for Galatasaray in 2008-09.

“All things considered, perhaps it would've been better for us to have the English referee in the away leg rather than the home one. In any case, our elimination was not down to the officials.

“Perhaps there was a foul on Yebda for Giuseppe Rossi's goal, but on the international stage that kind of decision can happen.

“We played well, created great chances, took the lead and defended firmly. Ezequiel Lavezzi is a crucial player for us, as he can turn a game at any moment.

“Now we have to face another two Serie A matches without him, as he has to sit out that ban, but we await his return with open arms.”
