Daniele De Rossi was not surprised at Italy’s struggles to break down the Faroe Islands. “It’s a classic minefield game.”

The Azzurri scraped a 1-0 victory away from home thanks to Antonio Cassano’s early goal, but were twice saved by the woodwork.

“This is your classic minefield game, as facing a small side that defends with 10 men, there’s no space to play in and you’re left open on the counter,” said the midfielder.

“It’s a whole other approach to the game last month when we beat Spain. It’s difficult to play when the entire opposition team is in their own half.

“Perhaps we didn’t move much off the ball either and we risked drawing a match when we had 90 per cent of possession.”

Italy now welcome Slovenia to the Stadio Artemio Franchi and a point will be enough to ensure Euro 2012 entry, as they have an eight-point lead at the top of Group C.

“The important thing now is to secure qualification on Tuesday. It could be a different type of game again, as we’re on home turf and Slovenia have more quality.”
