Outspoken Napoli chief Aurelio De Laurentiis has commented on the state of the San Paolo turf, Lorenzo Insigne and the Europa League.

Speaking to Radio Rai on Monday, the club owner covered a variety of subjects – starting with the terrible condition of the pitch at their home arena.

“The state of the San Paolo is not the responsibility of the mayor, but that of Napoli,” he said of the ‘beach’ which hosted the 2-1 win over Fiorentina last night.

“The problem is that a virus has got into the field of play and, with the high temperatures, has created the situation that we all saw yesterday. These things happen. It’ll be perfect within a month.”

The movie mogul was then inevitably asked for an opinion on Insigne, the local boy who has returned to the club this summer and who yesterday was named in Cesare Prandelli’s Italy squad.

“He has great technique and ability,” De Laurentiis added. “We want to value him. He’ll be a point of reference for this club.

“Insigne has already been sufficiently acclaimed, in a twinkling flash he has replaced Ezequiel Lavezzi in the hearts of the Neapolitans.”

The chief was also adamant that he and his sporting director had sufficiently strengthened the team over the summer with European football in mind.

“We’ll honour the Europa League, as we did the Champions League. That’s why we wanted to build two teams for this season, something we avoided in the past. We won’t ignore the competition.”
