Gigi De Canio is confident that Genoa will have a successful 2012-13 after only just escaping relegation this time around.

Coach De Canio replaced Alberto Malesani on April 23 and ensured their top-flight survival on the very last day of term.

Having kept the club out of Serie B, the former Lecce boss was rewarded with a permanent contract until June 2013.

“Genoa are a club where you can receive great rewards by achieving great results,” he stated on Tuesday.

“I can’t wait to get started and I’m positive that we will create a base to have a season full of satisfaction.”

De Canio will now sit down with the club’s new CEO, Pietro Lo Monaco, to discuss transfer strategy.

“It’s very important to start evaluating the players that we have in order to understand what we are missing,” De Canio noted. “Only the players with great motivation will remain.”

Lo Monaco confirmed earlier today that Alberto Gilardino and Alexander Merkel would definitely stay at Marassi.
