David Luiz could not hold back floods of tears as he apologised to “all Brazilians” after their German nightmare.

The Selecao collapsed 7-1 in the World Cup semi-final in Belo Horizonte and the defender wore the captain’s armband in the absence of suspended Thiago Silva.

“We wanted to make the people happy but we couldn't do it. Sorry to all Brazilians,” he told reporters after the game.

“Everyone knew how important this was… to see all of Brazil happy. The people suffer already for so many reasons.

“They were better than us, we conceded four goals in six minutes. It's a day of great sadness. We can only apologise. We are so sorry.

“We suddenly lost our way and they noticed we were unprepared, leaving gaps. The defence shook.

“It’s the end of a dream, and not in the way we wanted. But in my life I have always learned from experiences, so I will learn from this too. I'll never give up.”
