According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the local authorities are concerned there is “a very high risk” of clashes between the supporters.
This is not just because of the fierce rivalry between the local clubs, but the fixture is also proving to be a magnet for hooligans from all over the continent.
It’s feared ultras are flocking to the Stadio Olimpico for the game, even if they won’t necessarily have tickets, hoping to get into clashes outside the arena.
Fan groups from Greece, Spain, England, Poland and Croatia who are twinned with either Roma or Lazio will try to get involved.
Over 2,000 police are deployed to help keep security around the game.
An offensive banner from Lazio fans on Friday further ramped up the tension, as it mocked injured Roma star Nicolò Zaniolo.
It called him a ‘cripple’ and had a picture of a wheelchair, referencing a Roma player from the 1970s whose career was cut short by a series of knee injuries.
