The Calabrians knew they needed just one point to secure mathematical promotion into the top flight for the first time in their history, so 1,200 fans made the trip to the Stadio Braglia for this 1-1 draw.

Thousands more packed the piazza in Crotone where they watched the game transmitted on maxi-screens with flags, fireworks and smoke-bombs.

Modena were battling against relegation and determined too, as after 17 minutes Raffaele Palladino was caught in possession and Pablo Granoche knocked down a Daniele Giorico cross for Davide Luppi to volley in from six yards. However, replays showed Granoche was offside when the cross came in from the right.

Federico Ricci’s deflected effort was palmed wide, then he was brought down on the stroke of half-time for a penalty, converted by veteran Palladino.

Simone Gozzi was about to restore Modena’s lead after the break, denied only by a Claiton Dos Santos goal-line clearance, while Ricci’s diving header flashed just wide.

With just 12 minutes left on the clock, Riccardo Nardini was about to silence Crotone when fighting past Palladino, but the shot from six yards was somehow kept out by one strong Alex Cordaz hand.

Modena were determined and a looping Luppi header was cleared off the line at the back post by Pol Garcia. Crotone effectively ended the game with 10 men, as substitutions were completed with Gianmarco Ferrari limping badly.

Crotone are nicknamed I Squali (The Sharks) in honour of their club symbol.

They are only the third ever team from Calabria to make it into Serie A after Catanzaro and Reggina.
