Domenico Criscito looks back at the horrific moment he lost Euro 2012, his return to Italy and why there’ll be no Juventus-Napoli predictions.

The Zenit defender was dragged into the betting scandal when his room at the Coverciano training ground was raided by police just before the European Championship. He was only recently cleared of all wrong-doing and made his comeback for the Azzurri against Armenia.

“Being back with the Nazionale was a unique sensation,” he told Tuttosport. “Cesare Prandelli’s call really warmed my heart and I felt relieved.

“Now that a few months have passed from that crazy morning of May 28, I can think about everything that happened with a clear head and less of an emotional haze. I just have to shake it all off and forget the past. I am concentrated only on the present and the future.”

Criscito was back in Italy for only a week on international duty and returned to St Petersburg to resume the season with Zenit.

“If there’s something I really do not miss about Italian football then it’s the controversy. Excessive, repetitive, boring, tiring and even nauseating controversy. We should go back a few years and focus more on the football, less on the talking.”

Native Neapolitan Criscito was asked about tomorrow’s Juventus-Napoli showdown, but had a sarcastic note to add.

“I am sure it will be a splendid match between two of the strongest teams in Serie A. The Bianconeri are the favourites for the Scudetto, while the Partenopei play very well. Let’s not forget last season the only ones able to beat Antonio Conte’s men were Napoli in the Coppa Italia Final.

“I won’t make a prediction, though. If I were to get it right, I might get another dawn raid by police!

“I’ll become a father again in a few months, so Alfredo, who was born nine months ago, will no longer be an only child.”
