Domenico Criscito trusts Italy are “on the right track” and tried to reason with the referee after his dismissal against the Netherlands.

Simone Zaza had scored only moments before Criscito’s mistimed last-ditch tackle on Ryan Babel and consequent straight red card in a 1-1 draw.

“It’s a young squad, I think we had a very good first half and are on the right track. If we continue like this, we’ll achieve some good things,” the new Genoa defender told Rai Sport.

“I spoke to the referee and said it was a friendly, he could’ve let it go with a yellow, but perhaps I was last man.

“I work hard and try to give my best in every game. I am really thankful for this opportunity given to me.”
