There were 72 deaths related to COVID-19 in Italy over the last 24 hours, with 270 new cases out of 72,485 tests and intensive care patients dropping under 300.

The death toll since yesterday was 72, of which 27 were in the Lombardy region, so the total since the crisis began is 33,846.

Most importantly, the spread of the virus has slowed considerably, with just 270 new cases out of 72,485 tests (0.37 per cent).

Most importantly, the spread of the virus has slowed considerably, with just 270 new cases out of 72,485 tests (0.37 per cent).

Lombardy is the outlier, that region alone counting for 142 of the 270 new positive cases.

Another 1,297 were given the all-clear, with 23 released from intensive care (leaving just 293 now).

There are 5,002 in hospital, plus another 30,582 self-isolating at home with minor symptoms, so 35,877 current active cases (-1,099).

The pandemic is now very localised, with only Lombardy (142), Piedmont (38) and Lazio (28) having 20 new positive tests over the last 24 hours.

There were five or under in 15 out of 20 regions.
