The Aquile are downhearted after the midweek 3-0 thrashing by Bayer Leverkusen, which knocked them out of the Champions League.

“I don’t know their situation,” warned Coach Maran. “I just know Lazio are a great team who played important games. They might be disappointed by the Champions League elimination, but they have quality and are a cut above Chievo.

“This is why we must try to ride the wave of our own enthusiasm, building on the second half performance at Empoli.

“To do that, we need the same spirit against Lazio. We require plenty of courage and determination, as with those elements we’ll cause problems for every opponent, even Lazio.”

Mariano Izco and Ivan Radovanovic are long-term absentees, but Maran remains tight-lipped on his choice of strikers.

“I will make that decision when the time is right. The lads must focus on being ready when called upon and feel they are all first choice players.”

Simone Pepe is in the Chievo squad for the first time since leaving Juventus.

Chievo squad for Lazio: Bizzarri, Bressan, Seculin; Gamberini, Gobbi, Cacciatore, Cesar, Sardo, Dainelli, Frey, Mattiello; Christiansen, Hetemaj, Rigoni, Castro, Birsa, Damian, Pepe; Pellissier, Paloschi, M’Poku, Meggiorini, Inglese
