Sampdoria defender Andrea Costa said “there are far worse things” than the abuse he hurled at Inter’s Mauro Icardi.

Icardi bagged a brace in today’s 4-0 victory at Marassi and provoked the crowd after his first goal by putting his hand to his ear, inviting them to insult him louder.

The situation was extremely tense, as Icardi is engaged to Wanda Nara, the ex-wife of his ex-friend and ex-teammate Maxi Lopez.

Costa was on the bench, but had to be held back from going towards Icardi and was booked for his furious protests.

“I apologise to everyone for that ugly scene I am seeing now in some video footage,” wrote Costa on Twitter.

“At that moment the cameras were the last things on my mind. Besides, there are far worse things than those words.

“In any case, I apologise.”

Maxi Lopez had refused to shake Icardi's hand or look him in the eye before kick-off.
