There were 236 deaths over the last 24 hours related to COVID-19 in Italy, but another drop in intensive care beds and new cases, as the pandemic continues to ease.

Italy was the first European country to be hit by the coronavirus, but as it moves into Phase Two of the response this week, it has been surpassed by the UK in terms of most deaths on the continent (29,427, with 693 since yesterday).

There have been another 236 deaths in Italy over the last 24 hours, taking the total to 29,315.

Of those, 95 were in Lombardy since yesterday, in total 14,389 losing their lives in that region.

All the figures are continuing a downward trajectory, with over the last 24 hours 52 leaving intensive care (now 1,427), 2,352 declared cured (85,231) and a drop of 1,513 in the overall current positive cases (98,467).

Only 16,270 remain in hospital with symptoms, of which 1,427 are in intensive care, and 80,770 are self-isolating at home.

There is more good news from the fact only 1.9 per cent of the 55,263 swabs taken over the last 24 hours in Italy were positive, a drop from yesterday’s 3.2 per cent.
