There were 162 deaths related to coronavirus in Italy over the last 24 hours, 54 of them in Lombardy, but the current positive cases fell by 1,424.

Today, there were 162 deaths from the highly-contagious illness, taking the total to 32,169 since the crisis began on February 20.

There were another 813 positive cases, with over half of those (462) in the Lombardy region, out of a total 63,158 tests.

It means of all those tested, 1.2 per cent had COVID-19.

In Lombardy, that figure becomes 3.0 per cent.

Another 2,075 were given the all-clear, so the overall current positive cases fell by 1,424 to 65,129.

Since the pandemic began in Italy, there have been 226,699 positive cases, with 129,401 of them making a full recovery.

There are now 716 patients in intensive care (-33), 9,991 hospitalised (-216) and 54,422 at home self-isolating with only minor symptoms.

The ICU cases have fallen for 44 consecutive days.

While Lombardy remains a problem, the number of positive cases and deaths in many other regions are close to zero.
