Although Daniele De Rossi was enthusiastic about the idea, it seems as if Palermo are ready to sign Eugenio Corini as their new coach.

The Sicilians just earned promotion into Serie B for the 2022-23 season, only for coach Silvio Baldini and his director of sport to abruptly resign well into pre-season preparations.

They quit in protest at the approach taken by new owners City Group and a caretaker manager will be in charge for the Coppa Italia First Round game against Torino tomorrow evening.

De Rossi had been the hot favourite, but now multiple sources including Tuttomercatoweb and Sky Sport Italia point towards Corini.

He is expected to finalise the deal and sign the contract over the weekend.

This represents a return to the Stadio Barbera for Corini, who played here from 2003 to 2007, then was their coach in the 2016-17 campaign, albeit for just seven games.

He was on the Brescia bench from March to June 2022 in Serie B, only overseeing 10 games.
