The Coppa Italia Final between Fiorentina and Napoli was delayed after three men were shot in Rome.

It was supposed to kick off at 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT), but eventually began at 20.45 UK time.

There was an incident in the Tor di Quinto area of the city, far from the Stadio Olimpico.

There were three people injured in a shooting which police announce was not related to the game.

“A 30-year-old injured in the torso was taken to the Villa San Pietro hospital along with a 43-year-old man struck on the right hand.

“A third person, aged 32, was taken to the Santo Spirito hospital with gunshot wounds to an arm and a hand.

“The pistol presumably used in the shootings has been recovered. The investigators are listening to witness statements.

“At the moment the triple event does not seem to be linked to any trouble between fans, but was rather a coincidence.”

There were rumours that the fan struck in the chest had died in hospital, so Napoli ultras called for the game to be halted.

Captain Marek Hamsik went to the Curva Nord and spoke to the ultras leaders, assuring them that the reports were inaccurate and the fan is out of danger.

There was more tension at that moment with fans throwing fireworks on to the field, one exploding close to a fireman who was carried away by colleagues, but he was only shaken by the sound.

The Coppa Italia Final was eventually given the go-ahead, but official ultras groups from both clubs met and agreed to stay largely silent.
