Antonio Conte has made the most of the lockdown time by tailoring Inter to January signing Christian Eriksen. ‘We put him on a par with the others both physically and tactically.’

The Nerazzurri had struggled to fit Eriksen into the squad following his arrival from Tottenham Hotspur, but the Dane is now taking a more essential role behind the strikers.

“I am proud to see how the mentality of this team is growing,” the coach told news agency ANSA.

“I can see the players are aware if we want to be competitive and fight to win, every single player has to raise his own individual level of performance.

“We have a tough road ahead of us, with no short-cuts, a journey made of hard work and sacrifice, effort and passion, but at the same time great desire and ambition. I think we’ve started this journey on the right foot and with the belief that we need to face down difficulties.”

The three-month gap in the season may well have benefited Conte, as it allowed him to work out how January signing Eriksen could best fit into his squad, moving to a 3-4-1-2 formation.

“We’ve been able to work with Eriksen, settling him in the right way and putting him on a par with all the others in both physical and tactical terms. A coach is like a tailor, he has to sew the tactics to measure so they fit the players perfectly.”
