Lazio play the waiting game to convince Liverpool to lower the €7m price for Fabio Borini, but the player may go to Sunderland instead.

The 24-year-old is an object of interest for Biancocelesti President Claudio Lotito, but their initial offer in June was of €3.5m, only half of what the Reds are reportedly asking for now.

According to Il Corriere dello Sport, the fact that the player's contract is due to expire in January 2016 is prompting Lotito to wait.

His strategy would be to force Liverpool to lower the price, or else pick up the player for free in six months' time.

However this course of action could backfire for the Aquile patron, as Tuttomercatoweb now reports of a contact between Liverpool and Sunderland for the player, who seems increasingly distant from Serie A.
