Fiorentina President Rocco Commisso bemoans “mentality problem” in Italy as he touched on the sore topic of building a new stadium in Florence.

The Viola have been through another season in the bottom half of Serie A but the new patron suggested that his work to build a successful team is slowly making progress.

“The team risked being relegated last season, this year we are 13th in the table. But next year I’m sure we’ll be able to put all the pieces together,” he told in a speech at the Columbia University. “Also, because I have told our fans that I want to win something within five years.”

The American tycoon has been struggling to realise all his dreams for the Viola and is currently battling with the council to build a new stadium in Firenze.

The club was threatening to scrap the idea and Commisso touched on the subject in his speech.

“It’s impossible to build in Italy,” he added. “In Florence, there’s a stadium that is considered a monument and I have to discuss and come to an agreement with those who protect it.

“This person doesn’t care if people get wet or there are no suitable services. What matters to him, is to protect the structure.

“It’s a mentality problem and I’m not managing to give a new stadium to a beautiful city like Florence, despite having all the fans on my side.”
