The Nerazzurri knew their fate was not entirely in their hands, as they had to get a better result against PSV Eindhoven than Tottenham would away to Barcelona.

Radja Nainggolan was not fully fit, Matias Vecino injured, Roberto Gagliardini, Joao Mario and Dalbert not on the UEFA list, so there had to be some adjustments. Antonio Candreva was moved to a midfield role in the 4-3-3. PSV started ex-Inter defender Trent Sainsbury, as Daniel Schwaab and Bart Ramselaar didn’t make the trip.

Striker Luuk de Jong wants to match the all-time club record of four consecutive Champions League goals, achieved by Ruud van Nistelrooy in 1998 and Danny Koevermans in 2008.

Ivan Perisic had a huge opportunity just six minutes in, running on to a long Mauro Icardi ball and turning his header on to the near post.

The crowd went wild when news came through that Ousmane Dembele had put Barcelona 1-0 up against Spurs. However, they forgot the other important part of the qualification puzzle was beating PSV.

Eindhoven took the lead on 13 minutes when Kwadwo Asamoah was horribly caught in possession by Bergwijn, who crossed for Hirving Lozano’s diving header at the back post.

Asamoah was shaken by the error and continued to struggle, his attempt to stop Bergwijn turning into an accidental assist for De Jong, but Samir Handanovic rushed off his line to parry.

Icardi scuffed a big opportunity wide from the edge of the box, but Handanovic flew to palm a Bergwijn snapshot over the bar.

Straight after the restart, Icardi unleashed a powerful angled drive that Zoet palmed round the far post, then the goalkeeper had his gloves stung by a Matteo Politano strike, but Marcelo Brozovic ballooned well high and wide from Icardi’s assist.

Another Icardi attempt was deflected to skim the upright, but Inter finally drew level when Icardi peeled away from his marker for a precise header at the back post on Matteo Politano’s cross. It was a perfect way to mark his 200th appearance in an Inter jersey.

However, news came through from Camp Nou on 85 minutes that Lucas Moura had equalised for Tottenham. This meant Inter had to win.

Keita’s header was too close to Zoet and there was a desperate last-ditch tackle with Icardi going clear, then Lautaro Martinez wasted the header.
