Chievo President Luca Campedelli was livid after the 4-3 defeat to Fiorentina. “What’s the point in VAR if you make decisions willy-nilly?”

The controversial loss saw Emanuele Giaccherini’s goal disallowed because Sergio Pellissier had a toe on the penalty area line when the goal kick was taken, then VAR was not consulted after Pellissier seemed to be barged over by German Pezzella for a spot-kick.

“We cannot stay silent with what we saw today,” Campedelli told reporters.

“I have been a club President for 26 years and never seen anything like this. What’s the point in VAR if you make decisions willy-nilly?

“Now I am starting to think bad things, especially after 12 months of attacks against Chievo. I prefer a referee who makes a mistake on the field rather than one who gets it wrong while sipping tea.”

Coach Domenico Di Carlo was equally furious when speaking to Sky Sport Italia.

“The next time, if I am still the Coach of Chievo, that I attend the get-together with referees and designators, I will complain not about penalties given or not given, but on the inequality.

“If Pellissier’s stud on the line is enough to disallow a goal, then let’s use VAR and say Lafont was 10cm off his line and therefore able to save the penalty.

“I lost promotions because there was no VAR, but it’s there now and it ought to be used correctly. The problem is who is in the VAR booth, because today Daniele Chiffi had a good game and showed authority.

“Those in the VAR booth have to help the referee, not have so much power to create problems for the officials.”
