Reports this morning suggested that the Juventus defender would be assessed by the Azzurri medical team after limping out of training.

And national team doctor Enrico Castellacci has claimed that the centre-back has suffered a swollen calf and will sit out the game in Bari this week.

“Chiellini has some pain in his left calf,” he told reporters. “This morning we performed an ultrasound that showed some swelling.

“There’s no damage to the muscle fibres, but just fatigue. He will miss the match on Thursday.”

Chiellini however, should be fit enough to take his place in the XI for the Euro 2016 qualifier versus Norway next week.
