The referee’s association explained changes to the interpretation of handball and red cards in Serie A this season.

The 2016-17 campaign kicks off on Saturday and, like at Euro 2016, there are some adjustments.

The most important is the removal of the so-called ‘Triple Punishment’ of an automatic red card and penalty for a last man foul.

It can only be considered a straight red if the foul is particularly violent or purposefully denies a certain goal.

“If handball denies a goal, then it is a red card,” added AIA official Alfredo Trentalange.

“The novelty is in the fact that when a player tries to play the ball in a fair manner, for example the goalkeeper who comes out to seek the ball and makes contact with the opposition player, it’ll only be a penalty and no longer an automatic red.”
