They step up to the top flight along with Palermo and Empoli, as this will be their 13th campaign at the highest level.

The first leg had ended 2-1 to Cesena, but away goals do not count in the play-offs, so an aggregate draw would promote the team with the best position in the close season: Latina.

The Stadio Francioni was completely packed out for this potentially historic occasion and Latina got off to a strong start.

They took the lead after 13 minutes when defender Bruno smashed a right-foot shot under the bar.

With this result Latina would be in Serie A, but Cesena threatened an equaliser with a fine save on Coppola.

The goal did arrive after the break, as Defrel tapped in a Marilungo cross from the left.

Cesena were forced to substitute injured goalkeeper Coser and survived a late scare when Jonathas blasted over from close range.

The Cavallucci Marini consolidated their promotion with a penalty in the final minute of stoppages, converted by Cascione after Laribi’s foul on Marilungo.

It was one push too far for Latina, who were only re-founded in 2009 after bankruptcy and before this season had never even played in Serie B.

Latina 1-2 Cesena (2-4 on agg)

Scorers: Bruno 13 (L), Defrel 54 (C), Cascione pen 94 (C)
