Alessio Cerci said Italy “must face Uruguay as if it were a Final” after their 1-0 defeat to Costa Rica.

“In the locker room we looked each other in the eye, fully aware it wasn’t our best performance, but we’ll give it all against Uruguay,” the Torino winger told Sky Sport Italia.

“Something went wrong today, we have to turn over a new leaf and get the result against Uruguay. I believe we have the quality to do it.

“There are some great champions here and each of us needs to bring our pride out on to the pitch. We have the players who can make the difference.”

Cerci was introduced as a substitute to bring more pace into the game, but struggled to take men on.

“When you come on for the last 20 minutes, you must try to make the most of the chances given, but anyone who has played football knows it’s difficult in these situations.

“The choices are made by the Coach, who always picks the best XI for that situation. Now we have to recover our energy levels and then see who the tactician chooses.”

A draw would be enough for Italy to qualify, as they have a superior goal difference to Uruguay.

“I think we must always go out there to win and not make any calculations, so face Uruguay as if it were a Final. There is so much at stake and we know it’ll be a tough match.”
