Massimo Cellino insists he is “rational” after buying Serie B side Brescia but warns “it’s possibly madness” and that “my prayers won’t be enough.”

Cellino marked his return to football on Friday, when it was confirmed that he would be purchasing Brescia, and the former Cagliari and Leeds United owner was typically eccentric when discussing the reasons for his new venture.

“Brescia? It’s a club that have always been in my heart,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“It’s madness, possibly, but I’m doing it with great conviction. This is a club that have always been in my heart, where serious football can be played.

“The fans are friendly, although perhaps a little on the thin side, but if we do things right, with the results, they’ll be more of them.

“And more of us there are, the more fun we’ll have. It doesn’t take too long to rebuild a club.

“I followed Brescia last season, I saw them play so many times and I said so many prayers for them to stay up.

“This season, however, prayers won’t be enough: I can’t wait to get to work.

“[My predecessor] Gino Corioni was passionate, but I’m more rational. I don’t want to be influenced by what surrounds me.

“I look forward to thinking that in football, you can still win and do so with the right moves.”
