Leeds United have sacked Brian McDermott, with Massimo Cellino likely to take over the English club.

The Cagliari chief has had a delegation in Leeds for the last week, and is set to sign off on a 75 per cent purchase of the Elland Road outfit from Gulf Finance House soon.

But this evening, the manager has been shown the door, with star striker Ross McCormack telling Sky Sports News he has shocked by the announcement: “I'm absolutely gutted because I had a really good relationship with the manager. I was looking forward to helping the club move forward under Brian McDermott and he made me captain. I'm very happy and content at the club but a big part of that was Brian McDermott.

“If I'd known that this was going to happen, I'd have had a right decision to make. I think he was a bit surprised in terms of how quick it happened. I think he always had an inkling.

“Me, speaking on behalf of all the players, would like to thank the gaffer for all his efforts and wish him well for the future.”
