“I never had any doubts about joining Napoli,” he told the Gazzetta dello Sport.

“After four years in Palermo I felt the need to experience new challenges and seek new motivation.

“There were some talks with Inter and Tottenham, but the only concrete proposal came from President Aurelio De Laurentiis.”

Cavani is particularly excited about taking on Javier Pastore in Naples, the second home of Diego Armando Maradona.

“If Javier played for Napoli, then the city would go wild!”

Tonight's game is a head-to-head for places in Europe, possibly even a top four finish.

“We are in third place and therefore for the moment we're in the race for the Champions League.

“We deserve to be in this position because of the consistency of our results and performances.”
