Catania President Antonino Pulvirenti has dismissed the notion of giving the club’s players a target to achieve in 2012-13.

The Elefanti were at one stage of the season in contention for a Europa League place and, whilst a run of one win from their final 10 matches put paid to that, they still finished the term with a club record points tally.

With Coach Vincenzo Montella replaced by Rolando Maran and a number of players with their future still in doubt, President Pulvirenti is philosophical for next season.

With Coach Vincenzo Montella replaced by Rolando Maran and a number of players with their future still in doubt, President Pulvirenti is philosophical for next season.

“This year I will not fix any target. Last year the target of 50 points proved to be a limit – when we were about to get there we dropped.

“But still, the main objective always remains to avoid relegation,” he began to the assembled Press from the club’s pre-season base, before turning to the departure of Maxi Lopez.

“At Catania, we only want players who are interested in staying and he wanted another team, so we separated. Catania will find someone else.”

On a similar theme, new sporting director Sergio Gasparin spoke about the work being done to build a squad for next year.

“We are working hard this year because the fans are proud of us and we have responsibilities to those who support us.

“We have a diverse group, with players from different continents, but all wearing the same shirt. There should be not only professional commitment, but also a moral obligation to our fans who must feel proud of us. I’m sure you will all love this team.

“With Barrientos and Marchese the club is working to renew contracts. Without breaking through the economic barriers set, we’re working on this.

“With Barrientos, we are in a weak position because his current contract expires in 2013…”
